UV degradation of LCD

Hi.
Is it only the area passing through light that is dergrated, or is it the whole LCD?
I'm asking because I'm using a LED array, and if it's the whole LCD, I can maybe increase the lifetime of it if I only turn on LEDs in the used area when printing small parts.
